10+ great add-ons that only work with Firefox 4

Along with the ability to be restartless, Firefox 4 add-ons also have an entirely new interface to manipulate! There's a new add-on bar at the bottom of the screen, which replaces Firefox 3's status bar -- and then there's that infernal orange button that Mozilla, in its infinite wisdom, has made completely immovable.

There are other new features, too, like app tabs -- wouldn't it be nice to double click a tab, rather than having to fumble around with the right mouse button? And how about some visual notifications in those app tabs, too? Then there's the add-on that lets you set your tab width as narrow (or as wide!) as you like.

Finally, don't forget the handful of Firefox 4-only add-ons from Mozilla Labs that make the browser perform a lot like Chrome...

When Will Apple Cave And Accept Flash? Maybe When It Doesn?t Suck

I read an interesting article this morning that suggested Apple would change its mind and put Adobe's Flash technology on its iOS devices within a year. I don't think that's going to happen. In an open letter to users, Apple CEO Steve Jobs gave several reasons why he didn't want Flash on the iPad, iPhone or iPod touch. They are: Flash isn't open; the full web; reliability, security and performance; battery life; and touch. Adobe began shipping Flash Player 10.1 for Mobile last June, but even Laptop magazine admitted that "Steve Jobs was right," and that "Adobe?s offering seems like it?s too little, too late." Granted, that report was from six months ago, but it still doesn't bode well for the technology. There is no doubt that Adobe is making advances with Flash on mobile devices, but I don't believe future changes will be enough to get Apple to adopt the technology.

What are the first applications you install on a new computer?

newcomputer
Setting up a brand-new computer is a mixed blessing: On one hand it's a bit of a hassle, but on the other hand it often feels great to start off with a blank slate. It's a great opportunity to fix all those things that bugged you about the old system, or try out that new file organization scheme you were thinking about.

While apps like Ninite make it easier than ever to download and install a slew of tools all at once, the question still remains: What are your "choice apps"? With a new computer or fresh install in front of you, what are the first few applications you set up on each and every system you use? What apps are so essential to your computing experience that you can't see yourself doing without them? Let us know in the comments!

Mozilla F1 adds bit.ly account support, improves security

firefox 4 f1 sharing
After having just received a slimmer, vertical interface, the F1 sharing add-on for Firefox 4 has received another minor bump from the team at Mozilla Messaging. This time, F1 has added support for bit.ly accounts -- enabling you to track statistics for your shares alongside your other bit.ly links.

F1 also now offers better security out-of-the-box by storing OAuth information in the browser. Autocomplete has also been improved, and Linux users should now be able to utilize the dropdowns in F1 -- which is kind of important if you want to post to a group Facebook wall or send a direct message on Twitter.

Your Brain on Cellphones: Effects Present, Consequences Unknown

An issue that periodically makes its way into public discourse -- the impact and possible dangers to brain development and health posed by the ubiquitous use of cellphones -- is being revisited thanks to a newly published scientific study in JAMA. However, rather than offering any definitive answers, the new research, led by Nora D. Volkow of the National Institutes of Health, raises more questions.

Microsoft Research shows off next-generation gesture interfaces, Kinect integration, other neato stuff (video)
Leave it to Microsoft Research to show off some cool stuff that may or may not actually happen on any thing you ever actually buy. Check out the video after the break to see the latest, Director of Microsoft Applied Sciences Steven "Stevie B" Bathiche showing off a variety of interesting interfaces. It all starts with gesture controls that take you well beyond the touchscreen, relying on a retro-reflective sash and a camera to detect hand position. But, things quickly progress to a flat lens called a wedge that can enable holographic-like imagery. Pair that with a Kinect and perspective shifts come into play, tracking your face to enable you to peer around like looking out a window. It's all just waiting for you below -- and maybe IRL sometime in the future.

Mgnet.me shortens and deobfuscates BitTorrent magnet URIs

Mgnet.me, magnet URI shortener
Magnet URIs, which are a way of downloading torrents without actually downloading a .torrent file, are a fantastic idea, but a bit... long-winded. They're regularly over 200 characters long, making them too long to share with Twitter. Email clients can break them by inserting line breaks, and most annoyingly, very few IM clients make magnet links 'clickable.'

Mgnet.me, as you can tell from its ruthlessly eviscerated noun, shortens magnet URIs into something a lot more manageable. The Pioneer One episode 1 magnet URI goes from 148 characters, down to just 20: http://mgnet.me/ZQx. The best bit, though, is that you can assign an 'alias,' which nicely cuts through the magnet URI obfusctation -- for example: http://mgnet.me/.pioneer.

Of course, the main problem is that you have to head over to Mgnet.me to shorten URIs -- but don't worry, there's a Mgnet.me API! As you can see on Sailr, a magnet-only torrent search engine, shortened URLs are now easily available. Now we just need integration with a big-name BitTorrent client, like uTorrent, and magnet shortening will really take off.

Opera 11.10 Barracuda incoming

With nothing more than the most tantalizing of teasers, the Opera team has just announced that an early build of Opera 11.10, codenamed Barracuda, will emerge "in the near future."

As far as Barracuda's feature set is concerned, all we know is that "another popular Opera feature will be taken to the next level."

If any of Download Squad's seven Opera users are out there: shall we take some bets on which feature the Opera team is hinting at? Our money's on hardware acceleration, though that doesn't really fit with Opera's hint...

Samsung Galaxy S II gets price and release date

Galaxy S II

Samsung's dual-core, Gingerbread-powered Galaxy S II has appeared on Play.co.uk alongside a tentative SIM-free price and release date. According to Play, which is currently taking pre-orders for the phone, it'll ship Mar. 31 for £599.99 (~$960). Pre-release prices are never guaranteed to be accurate and are always subject to change, but £599 seems like a realistic price point for the Galaxy S II, as it's slightly higher than current single-core offerings from other manufacturers.

Can't wait another month for your Galaxy S II fix? Check out our hands-on coverage from MWC 2011. [Play.co.uk]

HD games optimized for NVIDIA Tegra tablets arriving in Android Market

tegra HD games android
With an avalanche of Android tablets powered by NVIDIA's Tegra 2 on display at CES 2011, it stands to reason that game developers would start releasing titles which can tap the platform's 3D power. A search on the Android Market website shows that's now starting to happen.

Several Tegra-optimized HD games are now listed -- including Samurai II: Vengeance, Spectral Souls, Backbreaker football, Dungeon Defenders, and an HD version of Fruit Ninja. The games range in price from $3 to about $14.50.

The descriptions proclaim smoother 3D, more realistic textures, and an overall superior gaming experience -- and not just when compared to the original Android versions. Samurai II proclaims "even more visual stunning graphics and polished gameplay" than its iOS version.

Take the jump to check out some sweet gameplay footage!
